Gazette 02/04/02

The former president of the world's second -largest software company is scheduled to speak at a forum about technology and innovation, Sen. jay Rockefeller announced today.

Ray Lane, former president of Oracle Corp., will be the keynote speaker at the third West Virginia Forum on Technology and Innovation, to be held March 1 at the University of Charleston.

Rockefeller began the technology forum two years ago to help West Virginians meet the challenges of the technology-driven global economy.

Lane graduated from West Virginia University in 1968 with a degree in mathematics.  He became the leader of Oracle Corp., in 1992, and helped the company increase its sales from $1 billion a year before he left to join the venture capital firm Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield and Beyers.

"Ray Lane brings home a life-time of hands-on experience as an entrepreneur, chief operating officer and a venture capitalist, Rockefeller said.  "the fact he is from West Virginia allows him to look at our state with a uniquely local perspective."

In 200, Lane gave $5 million to the WVU College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, one of the largest single bequests to the university.

The forum is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. at Riggleman Hall Auditorium at the University of Charleston
